I am brand spanking new to watercolor and after catching a Pocket Sketching show on PBS, I bought this little pad of paper, along with the paints the artist on the show recommended. My original idea was to try and do what the show was teaching – quick drawings outdoors. However, I decided to instead try to teach myself how to do full paintings sitting on my couch. 🙂
I??m giving this much info to explain that I knew absolutely nothing about watercolor painting. The pictures I??ve downloaded turned out surprisingly well…considering I laid down a lot of paint, stumbled on ??lifting?? paint when I made mistakes by basically scrubbing and dabbing with a clean wet brush to remove/edit the paint I laid down. This paper held up surprisingly well to my abuse! Sure it ??pilled?? in spots and seemed really worn thin…however, once the paper dried, the little pilled paper was able to be rubbed off with my finger and it didn??t affect the finished artwork at all. Because the paper warped due to the use of water, I simply placed it under a lot of heavy books once it dried and it became perfectly flat. The pictures were done using Winsor & Newton Cotman half pan watercolor paints.

Based on the product photo, I was expecting a flat bound pad (thermal or whatever). Instead this is spiral bound. Looking very close at the photo I now see there are tiny black dots where the holes for the spiral binding would be at the top, but the actual spiral binding is not shown.
The spiral binding is just a bit too small, so pages get messed up when you turn them.
Finally, the pad was shipped with no wrapper or protection of any kind, just thrown in a large box with some other thing I had ordered. Predictably it got beat up during shipping, so some of the pages were bent and creased. I wouldn’t normally give a bad rating due to shipping damage, but this is due to the way it’s packed.
The paper itself is nice, so if you don’t mind the spiral binding and are willing to take a chance on shipping damage, maybe you’ll be happy with it.
Customer Questions & Answers
Is this good for colored pencils?
Answer: Hi there! This is great for use with colored pencils!
is it size a3
Answer: No. It’s smaller. An a3 is approximately 11.7 x 16.7. This is 9×12 or 8×10 depending on the size you choose.
what is the shipping cost?
Answer: Free I think at least if you are a member. It was free for me
Are the tiny indents lines on the paper? Or dots? I can’t find charcoal paper without lines which ruin fine details. Thanks!
Answer: My purchase was a gift sent elsewhere, FWIW, in my very modest experience with using charcoal to draw on paper, the textured surface takes on the charcoal easier than the smooth surface.
