If you look at the rating on the tablet cover, two numbers are given: 60 Lb, and 89 g/m2. If this were 60 Lb bond paper, the two tablets together would weigh 7 Lbs. Instead the two tablets weigh just 3.6 Lbs on my digital scale. That weight puts this paper closer to 24 Lb bond. The basis for the 60 Lb rating is a grade of paper known as “offset text”. This is confirmed by the second rating of 89 g/m2. Yep, this is fairly thin paper of a grade that is just a tad thicker than normal 20 Lb copy paper.
I’m using it for practice with fountain pens. With normal prose writing, I don’t notice bleed-through. I only write on one side so bleed-through is not overly important to me, For ink drawing, though, this paper is too thin. Multiple strokes in the same area to darken a color or mix another color result in puddling and over-saturation.
The tablet cover plainly states that the paper is meant for dry media. If you are looking for a tablet for fountain pens and markers, you should probably keep looking.
Top Critical Review
While the paper itself seems to be of good material, the main and only reason I purchased this particular item is that it was supposed to have been “hard backed” and “protected”. So I took this as these were “hard covered” and “protected” in my very clear assumptions by the following two descriptions: “DRAW: ANYTIME, ANYWHERE with these strong, hardbacked sketchbooks which mean you don??t need a drawing board”, and “PROTECT YOUR ARTWORK IN OUR STRONG, HARDBACK SKETCHBOOKS!” To my surprise when I first held the items the cover was as thin as a sheet of regular paper, even thinner than the drawing paper. The back was, i forgot to measure but will estimate 1/8 inch thick cardboard, but not like a hard pressed mdf, just paper lightly pressed so any type of moisture in the air could get soaked up and shred and distort the notebook. It would have been better if they would have at least sprayed it with a laquer or something to protect the cardboard like is done for frozen pizzas. Since my daughter was needing this next day for school, I took it out to my woodshop and replaced the front and back covers with very thin plywood so it wouldnt get destroyed the first day in her backpack. She absolutely loved it since I scroll sawed her name in the corner and used colored CA glue to reinforce the small scrolling.
Customer Questions & Answers
Are the pages in this sketchbook easy to rip out? I love the sketchbook I??m using but due to everything I put it through pages tear out on their own
Answer: My child uses it an has yet to have a page come out on her own.
Not flimsy like a writing notebook, the pages have a good weight to them.
Is the paper thick
Answer: Yes, it is a heavy weight paper. very good quality.
Does it come with two as it shows?
Answer: Yes. They come shrink wrapped together. I’ve bought them several times for my daughter. We’re both very pleased.
Would I be correct in estimating 60 gsm to be about 40 lb paper?
Do you think you could use markers on them?
Answer: Yes. Just for you I tried out a marker drawing. Really nice tooth on this paper. It works wonderfully for marker or pen. I’m really liking this paper.
